DREAMCRAFTING
Do you dream of Owning your own home or Attending
the Academy Awards as a nominee or Starting your
own business or Achieving your ideal body image
or even Retiring at 50? You can, if you learn to
dreamcraft. That from Art McNeil, co-author of Dreamcrafting,
The Art of dreaming big.

The Science of making it happen. Art McNeil and Paul Levesque have
discovered that making a dream come true requires cultivating skills
of a higher order. They are called macroskills. They inevitably
spell the difference between success and failure, no matter what
the specifics of a person's dreams are. We know WHAT we want, but
do we know HOW to get there? Did you know that only 3% of all Americans
write down their goals? I guess the bottom line is what really makes
you happy? And probably the most important is, you have to start
with YOURSELF first! According to Art, there are five reasons why
most people never realize their BIG DREAM!
- )
There's no single clearly defined objective..
- )
There's no mechanism for sustaining motivation.
- )
There's not enough time to devote to it.
- )
There's little or no support from family and friends.
- )
There's no understanding of how every seemingly unrelated little
improvement advances the big dream.
In his book, Art tells the stories of big-time dreamcrafters who
made their dreams come true like Oprah Winfrey, Rudy Giuliani, and
Venus and Serena Williams…all different goals but the same technology
of dreamcrafting.
The
basics of dreamcrafting includes five macroskills for achieving
any goal:
- )
Aspiration. Igniting a sense of mission.
- )
Motivation. Intensifying and maintaining resolve.
- )
Projection. Linking today with tomorrow.
- )
Inclusion. Getting others involved.
- )
Application. Cultivating the dreamcrafting habit.
Most people throw up their hands and say, "Who am I trying to kid?
I just don't have the willpower to stick with some new project or
resolution and see it through." You know how it is. We all do it.
We get all excited, but then the determination kind of fizzles,
and things go back to the way they were. Sadly, millions have resigned
themselves to what they believe is their inherent inability to realize
their dreams. According to these two authors, the only thing such
people have failed to learn is a set of basic skills that would
make all the difference the next time they set out to achieve any
goal. I did love this line from Art, "Ours is a society full of
people with the will…but not the skill…to make their dreams come
true.
Dreamcrafting bolsters willpower with skillpower. It outlines techniques
for learning to strike a balance between conflicting immediate needs
and longer-term goals. It shows:
- )
How to take the long view to project today's realities into
tomorrow's vision of success.
- )
It provides us with practical techniques for investing rather
than simply spending time---living with "one foot in tomorrow."
