The United States has 30 percent of its population that
are obese. Almost 2/3rds are overweight. In Romania, where
I am currently, 22 percent are considered obese. I am
not advocating dieting, it's exercise! The true fountain
of youth is in exercise and the key to maintaining pace
with a fast paced business world. Well considering aerobics,
the exercising of the heart gets the blood circulating
and wards off wrinkles. Further, when you exercise you
are doing something for yourself every day. Moreover,
when you exercise you might weigh the same but take up
less space so you can wear a smaller size.
At almost 47 I look like I'm still 35 (at least that is
what many say), although my weight distribution changed
dramatically at 44. But I have kept exercising I just
changed my regiment.
I started exercising when I was 18 and have continued
to this point. Guaranteed I do not walk on water about
how often I do it but most times it is at least 4 times
a week. There were several times when I was severely injured
that I couldn't work out for a year and getting back into
the swing of it was difficult. But let me tell you, you
feel better about yourself, you maintain a youthful vigor
which is praised in America, and you can handle things
better when the going gets tough. In business, if you
start to look like you are old, they will think you have
petrified ideas. Think about it, most of our presidents
continued to exercise during their stay in office.
But as I mentioned before, exercise is the true fountain
of youth and will benefit you in the long run as you age.
Age discrimination is on the rise because in most cases
people just stop taking care of themselves. Let me tell
you, you have to do more and it costs more to look good.
But people that exercise have this energy around them
that is youthful and contagious. So get started, but first
go slow, then build up. Don't be the weekend athlete,
be consistent throughout the week. This may mean getting
up an hour earlier but it will be worth it.
Furthermore, try different exercises throughout the week
such as doing yoga one day, aerobics another, and strength
training with weights. Ladies, you don't have to worry
about building muscle but you are building stronger bones
that will help prevent osteoporosis. This is true for
men as well. There are a couple of times I have fallen,
like slipping in the shower and falling in my tiny kitchen
in Romania where I would have had broken bones but instead
I just got cut up and had a nice big shiner around my
eye.
Further, there are days I don't feel like exercising at
all, but that's when I need to do it. I try to do it first
thing in the morning to get it out of the way. I will
exercise for about 1 hour. In California I have an exercise
room where I can watch the news drink my coffee and work
out. Here in Romania I have started to include step aerobics
in my exercise regiment. I just play good music and go
for it, while checking my heart rate as I go along. I
also brought with me an exercise ball and use two 2.5
L water bottles filled for weights. I don't have the foggiest
idea where the gym is! I have incorporated some yoga with
my strength training and cool downs and my flexibility
has improved 100 percent.
Here are some tips to get started:
|
- Get advice from your doctor prior to any exercise
program;
- Find a variety of exercise routines to do to avoid
boredom;
- It takes at least three weeks to acquire a new habit
so give exercise a chance;
- If you like exercising around others, join a gym with
a friend and GO! Don't waste your money or your waist will be
too much to handle;
- Consider cooling down after your workout with flexibility
exercises such as yoga;
- If you have back problems like me, be religious about
your exercises. This is what has saved me from any major injury
while I've been in Romania. Also, with back problems you have
to strengthen the tummy too to keep you upright so exercise
those too; and,
- Just do it! And you will find that you and your friends
will notice a change in you, and that extra enthusiasm will
spell success for your future.
